Their process for this is sound but they try to rebrand it as something unique.The Bad: A majority of the book is meta analysis and reference to other much better books like Theil’s 0 to 1 or the timeless classic Positioning. Go buy and read those books instead. The read itself is full of way too many generic success stories, most you’re familiar with, and then pandering to advertise the authors’ consulting process.The Ugly Truth: A few problems the author doesn’t mention. Being a first mover or category king, you are 4x more likely to go out of business, and even if you survive, you’re statistically bound to make less of a profit then the competitors who come to unseat you. Looking at all the successful category creators gives you a false sense of risks and negatives of being a first mover.

Not sure I would give any biz book 5 stars, but I read about 3-4 a year and this is one of the best in recent years - in part as the playbook for category domination is well-timed for my business. The thesis is well-founded - a few companies (1-3) take almost all the spoils from new categories. for example in marketing automation software, here's the rundown for value creation for the companies that launched in last 10 years: Marketo $1.8B, Eloqua $850M, Pardot $80M and the rest....? Or file management: Box, Dropbox, that company that renamed itself...and ??? You get the point.Would like to have read more and less obvious case studies - google, amazon, salesforce etc are all so unique in the scale of their success and category domination. would like to have heard more about companies that jumped into the #1 slot in categories that had 3-8 competitors early on - and how they used their own category "lightning strikes" to turn the category into a 1 or 2 horse race.Advice on how to do category design in a big company or for own personal life seemed a little thin - but the core of the book is aimed at entrepreneurs and provides the playbook and advice to go after a category and win. So if you think your company has potential, buy this book. I just bought ten more for my mgt team and other CEO friends.

Although I read this book in 2019 I wish I read it 10 or 20 years ago. I’m sure that the message and execution ideas would be just as relevant in 2029 as well.The take home messages is to “be different not better”. I found this valuable as I was recently struggling on how to reinvent my career, and myself for that matter.The book takes you through a whirlwind yet very personal tour of both the startup and corporate world of how to establish your business as a category king who dominates a new market category—one that you become the control point for because you are the one to have defined the problem. You are also the one to frame the problem so succinctly that people could only see you as the solution to that problem.This book will probably be the best investment I make this year and I’m looking forward to looking back on my results in 2020.Don’t think about buying this book. Just buy it. Of the dozens of book reviews I’ve left this is the one that I will most remember. This is the only book to provoke that emotional response that will get me off my butt and get shit done.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late 1960s, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. The second book in the Dragon Master series, “Saving the Sun Dragon”, continues the story begun in “Rise of the Earth Dragon”. It is also a chapter book that will engage new readers. It can be an enjoyable read-aloud for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners who have advanced beyond Little Golden Books. Tracey West has written a book that has magic dragons; features multi-ethnic children learning to become Dragon Masters; Griffith, a wizard, complete with a long, flowing white beard, who is the Dragon Masters’ instructor; and King Roland who may have nefarious plans for the dragons and the Dragon Masters.When Ana’s dragon Kepri becomes ill, King Roland orders Griffith to heal Kepri. If he cannot, Roland will replace Griffith with another wizard. The young Dragon Masters – Drake, Ana, Bo, and Rori – help Griffith search through a “giant pile of books” as they seek a cure. Transported to a faraway land, the Dragon Masters encounter Heru and his dragon Wati who is Kepri’s Moon Dragon twin. Attacked by tomb robbers, their adventure takes a dangerous turn; with the dragons’ help, they escape. Telling Wati that he, too, is a Dragon Master, he then tells the four that he and his family serve the dragons rather than being the dragons’ masters. The four Dragon Masters and a healed Kepri return to King Roland’s castle just in time to prevent Griffith’s being replaced.“Saving the Sun Dragon” is an easy to read book. Chapters are brief, the vocabulary is not particularly sophisticated or difficult, and sentences are simple and short. The subject matter will interest young boys who may find some early reader books “boring”. There is magic and action, and there are mythical creatures that will engage children. Graham Howells’ black and white illustrations are on almost every page. This feature is a something I appreciate since my five-year old grandson has advanced to having chapter books read aloud to him at bedtime, but still wants pictures included with the story.If you are looking for a series of books that will interest early readers, particularly boys, you will want to look at the Dragon Master series. It is not necessary to have read “Rise of the Earth Dragon” to enjoy “Saving the Sun Dragon”. Tracey West provides enough background information in this second book of the series to allow it to be enjoyed independent of “Rise of the Earth Dragon”. However, if your young reader or listener is anything like my grandson, you will not only want the first two books of the series, but will pre-order the others!

My 7 year old son & I LOVE this series!! He reads independently, but we like to read this together before bed. The stories are suspenseful and captivating. My son is not particularly into dragons, so I wasn't sure if he would enjoy the first one, but he's hooked! We've read 1-7 and awaiting #8 to be released in the Fall. :)

My 6 year old son loves these books! We purchased the first one in the series at his schools book fair. I was a little worried it might be too advance for him since he is only in Kindergarten. We read a few chapters each night and finished it much quicker than I expected. I ordered this one and we got through it quickly too. He really enjoyed hearing about the different dragons and all the Dragon Masters. He was very engrossed in the plot and loved the suspense of it all. He also loved to look at the illustrations and talk about the characters. We even ended up doing his first reading fair project about the first book. I got to draw all the dragons and characters for him! We are really excited for the third book to come out and are eagerly waiting to order it. If you have a younger child who likes dragons, I highly recommend this series. It is a fun and adventurous read. Well done!

This is the second book in the series and my son and I are currently loving reading it together. We read 2-3 chapters every night and he can't get enough. The pictures are great and inspire his creative mind. The writing is simple and imaginative for his age group (1st grade). We will soon be buying the 3rd book and I am hoping by the time we are done with the 5th he will be able to read them all back to me :)

I bought a bunch of these books for my daughters birthday. I know she loves them because she’s gotten them from the library and has read them before. I give it 4 stars because I was disappointed that they came in an envelope instead of a box. Since these are paperbacks some of them did get slightly bent.

My 1st grade son absolutely loves this series, and is anxiously awaiting more releases! I'm so glad that Scholastic has begun this new line of early chapter books- they are perfect for early readers who are anxious to read "cool" books!My son really looks up to his older brother (in 3rd grade) who reads lots of exciting books- Harry Potter, Percy Jackson... yet he is not quite at that reading level yet. This series is perfect for a kid who wants to read cool books, yet isn't quite at that Young Adult reading level yet.We can't wait for Scholastic to release more books in the Branches series!

My 7 yo likes this but felt overall for the series it was sort of boring. She likes the Pyramid Land and how the stories inter-relate, but there's a ton of world crafting explanation in this one instead of storytelling or any action. She has not reread it.
