I am an adult who read this book to help out with our Lit Wars contest participants. These students are in 4th-5th grade. I think the humor and conflict in the book are geared more for a 7th-8th grade maturity level and if I were choosing the books for this contest, I would not pick this book for this grade level. There are adult themes in this book - child abuse/neglect, alcoholism, gun violence. But there is a lot of humor in the book as well (poking fun at reality "survivalist" tv shows) and I really enjoyed it.

I’m a true fan, but this outing was not up to the level I expect from Carl Hiaassen. I was astonished to notice the misapplication of some words, mainly toward the end. Also, this story line veered from his usual focus on the environment to more of a focus on stupid people interacting with wild animals to their own detriment, and not so much about the impact on the animals.Possibly my biggest gripe, though, has to do with the heroic good sense of the son compared to the thoughtless misbehavior of his father. The kid is the grownup in the room, and that’s somehow OK? I know that’s what plays out in too many families, but is it helpful to portray it in teen literature in a way that almost glorifies it? I’m not so sure.Overall, Chomp comes across as somewhat amusing, not quite fully baked. It should have spent more time on an editor’s desk before release.

What I love about Carl Hiassen is though he writes funny books, he never uses stupid, goody or extremely childish humor. He makes me laugh, even when I am rereading his books!I also love the settings of his 4 novels for kids, they are all in Florida. All the animals and wildlife and plantlife add to the story, and he incorporates them well. The characters are all great to read about as well, though in each book the MC is a boy and has a girl sidekick, though I don't really mind this little fact.

"Chomp" should get five stars for the nifty cover design alone, but the witty and unflagging intelligence of the content certainly cements the rating. Social commentator and satirist Hiaasen takes aim at one of his favorite general categories of offender in this book--the Phony; in this case, an over-the-hill TV nature "explorer" with a penchant for making grisly meals of his animal costars. Much of the action is set in the Florida Everglades, where the self-named Derek Badger has come to shoot a survival flick that pits him against the local fauna. In most cases, Badger's fauna opponents are tame and rented, but this time around the big man (aiming for a major raise in his contract salary) insists on real wild animals in order to boost the action and excitement. In true Hiaasen fashion, things go downhill for the poser pretty quickly after that. The book has a full contingent of wonderful characters, with two high school age kids fronting as the main protagonists. The adults on board are a mix of principled and venal, but nothing as crazy wild as is the norm for some of Hiaasen's adult books. In many ways, the animal characters are the biggest stars and will certainly be a big hit with the young readers of the book. The cast includes a monster alligator (Alice), a humongous python (Beulah), a wild bat and a wild water snake. The basic message to the readers is even these fearsome creatures are not so dangerous if left alone and observed from a respectful distance. The author gives his story line enough edge to keep it interesting and moving along at a good pace, but no one suffers the kind of torments and painful death that is often on offer for villains in the adult books. Respect for animals, the absolute unacceptability of child abuse (and what to do about it) and the inside story of documentary film making are all themes explored in this great book for tweeners and above. The next time I tune into a PBS nature film starring a spray-tanned, grinning host who is never out of the frame for more than 10 seconds, I will be thinking of "Chomp" and Hiassen's hilarious sendup of the genre. Hightly recommended.

This book is awesome. My students fought over who was going to read it. I had some students finish the book I less than a week, and that's all they taliked about. I ordered 5 copies and they all came in brand new condition. For kids that struggle to find a good book to get into, look no further, my students could not put the book down.

Even though I'm a northerner who would be terrified by the exotic animal life of Florida. The man invented LOL. CHOMP mostly has snakes, alligators, and bats. Also the usual assortment of Hiassen crazies. It also has a crazy with a gun. One of those recently killed Carl's brother. After this book was written. But hey, this is a book review, not a political rant about crazy people with guns.

I’ve been a huge fan of the author. My time in Florida helps understands the truth in his books. He paints the issues in a sarcastic style that leaves you laughing yet keenly aware of the rapidly changing conditions in the Sunshine State. This book has action, humor, and well written crazy characters. Loved it!

If you have never read Carl Hiaasen, do so. His adult novels are funny with nutty characters. I am from Florida and his characters are real. This is the first of his young adult books. I have read them all. I give them as gifts repeatidly.
